Prof. Talaga is teaching two sections of CHEM 120: General Chemistry I and one section of CHEM 106: Principles of Chemistry

General Chemistry I covers the following topics.

  • Units conversions and dimensional analysis.
  • Naming of simple compounds
  • Atomic theory
  • Stoichiometry
  • Properties of Gases
  • Properties of Solutions
  • Reactivity of Acids and Bases
  • Precipitation Reactions
  • Oxidation and Reduction Reactions
  • Quantum Mechanical model of the atom
  • Molecular geometry and bonding
  • Intermolecular forces

Prof. Talaga's sections of CHEM 120 are run as a flipped classroom where students watch previously recorded lectures at home and then engage in guided problem solving practice during scheduled class time.

Principles of Chemistry offers preparation in the physical science, chemistry, and applied mathematics to ensure student success in the General Chemistry series of classes.

  • The Periodic Table of the Elements
  • Chemical Notation
  • Units conversions and dimensional analysis
  • Significant figures and errors in calculations
  • Use of algebraic formulas in chemistry
  • Problem Solving strategies
  • Applications of algebra in chemistry problems
  • Proper use of dimensions and units in computations
  • Techniques to ensure dimensional consistency during algebraic manipulations
  • Interpretation of graphical data
  • Atomic structure
  • Purpose and use of basic chemistry lab ware
  • Basic statistics for general chemistry
  • Relating the results of data analysis to chemical
